in 1848 the treaty of Guadalupe hidalgo guaranteed american citizenship to all former mexicans in new mexico. this included women. however, all women remained disenfranchised. this led to the creation of influential women's clubs in the 1890s.
Alice paul was the forerunner of the woman's party, and she along with most other new mexico women focused on national suffrage politics. in 1917, Paul appointed Adelina Otero-Warren to lead the state congressional union. with the work of these women, women won full suffrage by the state legislature of the amendment in 1920.
new mexico's women of all nationalities, races, and religions came together to fight, and won. each played a crucial role to how they won.
