1) Some of the important women who won political elections early in New Mexico's history were Soledad Chacón (first female governor and first secretary of state), Isabel Eckles (a teacher and an elected superintendent), and Bertha M. Paxton (a New Mexico congresswoman in the House of Representatives).
2) In 1922, New Mexico was the first state to have a female governor. In 2010, New Mexico was the first state to have an elected Hispanic female governor.
