African American conquistadors

1. Their role was being merchants, soldiers, fisherman, etc.
2. The article used the example of fort mosé, where Francisco menendez presented a petition to Governor Manuel de Montiano for a land grant. The governor accepted and in 1788, fort mosé was established. There, many formally enslaved Africans found sanctuary from English Carolina.
3.  Race in colonial New Mexico was pretty much based on if you were American born, Native American, African, or Spanish. It also was based on how much money you had and who you married
